How do you clean a sail?
Most sail makers recommend frequent rinsing with fresh water.
If that is not sufficient, spread the sail on a smooth, clean surface and brush it lightly with a mild detergent solution or with a specially prepared cleaner such as “Sail-Kleen” or “Sail-Bath” from Davis.
Can you wash sails in a washing machine?
Note that your sails will never become totally white and clean again, but they will look a lot less worse. Again, no machine washing. I tend to get a lot of salt spray on my sails so I wash them at least once a year on the driveway with a scrub brush on a long broom handle.

Next spread the sail out flat and scrub with the mild bristle laundry brush. Treat the stained areas with a 2-4 percent solution of bleach and water. Rinse thoroughly and hang out to dry. I used the bath tub because the side of the tub offered a large flat surface for scrubbing the sail a section at a time.
